Empowering Kenyan Youth Through SRHR Advocacy

Challenge:

Despite significant strides in women's rights in Kenya, many young people, especially in rural areas continue to face challenges related to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). . the young people in the urban areas lack the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively advocate for these issues Inua Dada Foundation recognized the need to empower young people to become effective advocates for SRHR and contribute to positive social change. and sought to equip young people with the tools to leverage this powerful platform.

Our Intervention:

To address this challenge, we facilitated a training session on SRHR social media advocacy with or 50 university-going students from Nairobi County Kenyan university students participating in the Inua Dada Foundation's Generation Parliament program. The training aimed to equip young people with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to advocate for SRHR issues within their communities and institutions mpower young people to use social media effectively to raise awareness, mobilize support, and advocate for social justice issues.

Key Objectives:

  • Increase understanding of SRHR concepts and issues

  • Develop effective advocacy skills, including communication, negotiation, and coalition-building

  • Empower young people to become active agents of change in their communities

Training Methodology:

  • Interactive workshops and discussions

  • Case studies and role-playing exercises

  • Group activities and presentations

  • Guest speakers from relevant organizations

Training Content:

  • SRHR concepts and principles

  • Sexual and reproductive health challenges faced by young people

  • Advocacy strategies and techniques

  • Gender equality and intersectionality

  • Media advocacy and storytelling

Impact:

The training session had a significant impact on the participating students, empowering them to become effective SRHR advocates. Key outcomes included:

  • Increased knowledge and understanding of SRHR issues

  • Development of advocacy skills, including communication, negotiation, and coalition-building

  • Enhanced confidence and self-esteem

  • Increased motivation to engage in SRHR advocacy within their communities

  • Strengthened commitment to promoting gender equality and women's rights

Conclusion:

The SRHR advocacy training provided by Inua Dada Foundation was a valuable experience for the participating students. By equipping them with the necessary knowledge and skills, the training has empowered young people to become effective advocates for SRHR and contribute to positive social change in Kenya.
