Comprehensive Sex-Ed for Athletes with Intellectual Disabilities

Challenge:

Juvenile boy offenders aged 11 to 19, face significant challenges that impede their personal development and well-being. These challenges include low self-esteem, poor literacy levels, severe corporal punishment, and a lack of proper sex education. Additionally, the boys struggle with anger management, body image issues, and misconceptions about sexual behavior and relationships. Without proper guidance and education, these issues can lead to harmful behaviors and further entrench the cycle of violence and misinformation.

Our Intervention:

Special Olympics Nigeria partnered with LSIV to create a comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) toolkit specifically designed for athletes with ID. This toolkit utilizes accessible language, visuals, and activities to empower athletes with the knowledge and skills they need to:

  • Understand their bodies and bodily autonomy.
  • Develop healthy relationships with a clear understanding of consent.
  • Learn personal hygiene and puberty
  • Communicate effectively about their needs and desires.
  • Practice safe and responsible sexual behavior.
  • Identify and avoid risky situations.

Impact:

The development of this CSE toolkit is a groundbreaking step towards ensuring the safety and well-being of Special Olympics athletes in Nigeria. By providing them with the necessary knowledge and tools, the program empowers them to make informed decisions about their bodies and relationships. This not only protects them from abuse but also fosters a sense of self-confidence and personal empowerment.
